In order to meet the demands of both academic research and national strategic development, the construction of a series of world-class innovation platforms is under way.

As of the end of June. 2017, the university has established numerous innovative platforms, including the Robot Institute of CUHK(SZ), the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, the National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, the Shenzhen key laboratory of Semiconductor laser, the Shenzhen Finance Institute, the Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ), two Nobel Laureate Labs (Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology & Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery) and the first Turing Award Laureate Lab (Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences),etc..

1)Robot Institute of CUHKSZ

The institute, jointly with Shenzhen Ganglong robotic and intelligent manufacturing technology corporation, will implement the scientific research achievements transformation and industrialization, preferential invest the latest scientific research achievements of hatching institute, create a national science and technology business incubators and accelerator, boost the rapid development of the innovative entrepreneurial teams, create a national important demonstration foundation of robotic and intelligent manufacturing.

2)Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data

Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD) is a public service platform supported by Shenzhen Governments and National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen (Shenzhen Cloud Computing Center). SRIBD has an ultimate goal of constructing a world-class “Big Data Processing and Analyzing R&D Base”, which will be an innovative scientific research institution with critical technology advantages in Smart Healthcare, Intelligent Communications and Transportation Management. Additionally, SRIBD is keen on personnel training, technical services and communication in smart management area, and devotes to provide decision-making basis for urban managements to governments, making contributions to local and national scientific research and industrial development in Big Data.

3) National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing

The National-local joint Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing, leading by Prof. Yangsheng Xu (an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), has set up a strong scientific research team. From the scientific research rank, this team is one of the most active robot research teams in the world. It takes on a large number of national scientific research programs and has successfully developed more than 30 robots and intelligent systems in the field of space robots, industrial robots, service robots, special robots, medical robots and intelligent car robots.

4)Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing

The Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory of Robot and Intelligent Manufacturing is dedicated to the robot study field (space robot, special robot on security safeguard, intelligent community service robot, and industry robot & automation equipment, etc.). It is expected to make great contribution to the development of the intelligent technology in the Pearl River Delta Area.

5)Shenzhen key laboratory of Semiconductor laser

The laboratory of the Shenzhen key laboratory of Semiconductor laser covers area of 500 square meters. The team has nine overseas returnees with PhD degrees (one academician, one expert of the Thousand Talents Plan, one expert of 1000 Plan’s Program for Young Talents, six professors, two backbone members of partner companies), accounting for 36% of the total number of the team. Project Leader and core backbone scientific research members have long-term photonics research experience, and lead the completion of a number of US or Hong Kong research projects.

6)Shenzhen Finance Institute

Partially funded by the Shenzhen municipal government, Shenzhen Finance Institute (‘SFI’, in preparation) is an independent affiliate of CUHK(SZ) focusing on graduate and doctoral education and researches in the finance and economy related domains. As a member of Shenzhen’s financial community, it will also strive to contribute to the development of the financial center by acting as a world class think tank both locally and nationally as well as providing high-end professional training for practitioners.

7)Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ)?

Innovation and entrepreneurship base for Galaxy World & CUHK(SZ) was based on the cooperation between Galaxy World Group and CUHK(SZ) to encourage student entrepreneurship. Galaxy Group will provide office spaces and funds to be managed by the University Foundation in accordance with its financial Rules and Regulations. Center for Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship will provide innovative teaching courses for entrepreneurship teams, carry out project-based teaching and training, promote technology transfer, communication and cooperation.

8) Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology (the “Institute”) is the first Nobel Laureate Lab established in CUHKSZ. The Nobel Laureate Lab is one of the important parts for Shenzhen "Top Ten Action Plan". The Institute is headed by Arieh Warshel, the Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2013.

Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology is intended to become one of the world’s most advanced computational biology centers, conducting research on cutting-edge biotechnologies (structural biology, molecular medicine, multi-scale biomolecule simulations, high-throughput Genome Sequencing analysis and translational research of gene diagnosis technology). Professor Warshel wishes to turn this institute into a platform where top researchers from around the world can collaborate and contribute. Meanwhile, the institute is to serve as a hub to boost significant global cooperative projects and to become a multidisciplinary educational center, nurturing young computational biologists.

The Institute will help to attract excellent researchers and open up new opportunities for Longgang and Shenzhen with respect to life science industry.

9) Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery and Arieh Warshel Institute of Computational Biology are the first batch of Nobel laureate labs at the University. The Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery (the “Institute”) is led by the by Brian K. Kobilka, the Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2012. These two institutes is a significant milestone in the University’s attempt to evolve into a world research university.

Professor Kobilka will engage in directing and staffing the institute. His wish is that young and talented scientists could work on receptor structural biology, physiology and pharmacology in collaboration with top pharmaceutical companies to commercialize innovative drugs. Professor Kobilka works as distinguished professors in CUHKSZ, engages in research and sharing their research results with students. Research and talent cultivation should form a mutual beneficial relationship.

The Institute will help to attract excellent researchers and open up new opportunities for Longgang and Shenzhen with respect to life science industry.

10) Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Study in Information Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

The Hopcroft Institute for Advanced Information Science (the “Institute”) was founded by John E. Hopcroft, the Turing Award winner in 1986. Prof. Hopcroft received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1964, and he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

One of the purposes of establishing the institute is to provide an excellent research environment where scholars and scientists may conduct research on artificial intelligence and computer science.

The Institute would engage in research on super distributed system, security and privacy protection for distributed data, data intensive computing, content and scenario perceptional computing, and deep learning-based intelligent computing, which are all highly complex disciplines and will produce a huge impact on social development.
